Advanced Story Writing
![]()
At this point in the story-writing
program, introduce the advanced story prewriting
form. This form introduces sequencing in the prewriting stage and requires
the student to come up with a specific sequence of events for his story.
Once the child
has finished prewriting the story, have the child use regular lined paper to
write the story. When he writes
the story, have him write the title on the top line. Point out that his name is
written under the title and called the “byline”. The byline tells everyone who
wrote the story (the “author”).
For the first
(and if needed second) paragraph, the child should incorporate the prewriting
elements as before.
For the next
paragraphs, he should put in his sequence of events as he has been doing.
After the story has been completed, have
the child read you the story. Then take away his form
and have him tell you the story (in order). This is VERY important for practice
of oral retelling and sequencing. The teacher can ask comprehension questions
throughout.
The advanced prewriting form can be used for a long time as
the child develops his writing skill. Short stories with increasing amounts of
complexity can be developed as the child progresses.
