Reading comprehension and Literature
Narrative writing is story
telling. Examples include stories (personal,
true, imaginative), fables, fairy tales, myths,
poems, plays, and biographies.
Our narrative reading
and writing programs work in parallel. Basically, the child learns to sequence
and then orally retell a story he reads. In a parallel fashion, the child
learns to sequence and then write an original story using structured
techniques.
General
reading instruction
At Last! A Reading Method for Every Child
Eric has completed the basic reading
program and is reading at a third grade level. His continuing
reading instruction is in three parts.
1.
Weekly complete phonic flashcard review and phonic summary review using
worksheets from his reading program.
We continue to review these basic phonic items on a weekly basis and
plan to continue to do so until reading is fully fluent and independent.
2.
Story reading from his developmental readers after guided introduction of new
words using uniform decoding. Readers used are Pathway
Readers. Eric reads two stories ALOUD each week (usually reading 1/2 story
per day).
3.
Pathway Workbooks These workbooks include various
reading comprehension skills correlated with the stories. The corresponding
workbook pages are completed on the days that they story is read.
Narrative Reading Comprehension
These are a series of exercises applied to well-known children's literature in order to strengthen
sequencing and retelling skills. Eric works on one story a week. Currently, he
is reading fairy tales.
This program involves progressively complex story writing using
structured techniques. Eric writes one complete story each week. He does the
prewriting one day and writes his story the next day.
The following topics include general skills associated with narrative writing as well as some basic grammar. Some topics may take several weeks to finish. I used a variety of resources to teach these topics focusing on high repetition.
