Language Arts Curriculum

2004-2005

*              Reading and Reading Comprehension

Reading instruction will continue using the Pathway Readers for Grade 5. The workbooks will be continued as well. New words for each story will continue to be introduced first using uniform decoding and then Eric will read the stories and complete the accompanying workbook pages.

Reading comprehension will be developed through completion of the Pathway workbooks as well as guided comprehension exercises of selected literature and science topics.

*            Other Reading Materials

After Eric completed the Pathway reader for Grade 5, I ordered the grade 6 reader and workbook. The reader seemed too hard and too abstract for my son. So I decided to give him a break from the series and I used the following resources for reading for a few months. Most of these I got in a big odd lot from ebay.

                 Roads to Follow (Dick and Jane Series level 3-1)

                 More Roads to Follow (Dick and Jane Series level 3-2)

                 SRA Specific Skills Level A

                             Finding the Answer

                             Using the Context

                             Getting the Main Idea

                             Identifying Inferences

                             Getting the Facts

High Interest Classics

Eric will read these abridged stories using guided readers available from the publisher and Remedia publications (although they donít have it online, you have to call them). You can also order them from High Noon Books,  During his reading (usually over two weeks) he will watch a movie version of the story as well and compare the two versions.

Comprehension Questions (answer questions, fill in the blanks, matching, cloze activities, multiple choice)

                 Outlining text and oral presentation from outlines

                 Writing summaries

                 Writing guided research papers

Structured specific paragraph writing techniques will be taught using the following resources:

*             Paragraph Writing

*            Vocabulary

This year we will discontinue formal spelling instruction and use custom created vocabulary activities created on Edhelper.  Words will be taken from science and social studies content words.

*  Word Skills

* Daily Language Review

                   * Thank you Notes and Letters
