Story Writing

Parallel with our
narrative reading comprehension program, we introduced Story Writing. Our goal was to make the structures of story writing very
clear and concrete so that Eric could recognize story sequencing while reading
and create story sequences while writing.
Many of the ideas for teaching story writing using prewriting
forms came from the excellent book; Teach Me Language. I am indebted to the authors for the
concepts of structuring writing instruction using prewriting forms. However, I
found that this particular material in Teach Me Language was presented in a confusing way. Also
the book is aimed at hyperlexic children, which my child certainly was not!
I therefore made several modifications, additions,
and adaptations from the forms and ideas in the book that I hope make the
sequence of teaching story writing clearer. In addition I have added some
sequencing ideas from other sources
We are teaching story writing in the following sequence. Each step
adds more complexity and structure to the child’s story. The advanced story
writing template can be used for a very long time as the child’s stories become
more detailed and complex.
