Math 2003-2004

This year we switched to a more
structured curriculum. The previous year was spent learning math facts and
trying to fill in some holes in my childís math knowledge.
.
I retained the use of the Math
Meeting from Saxon Math grade 3. This interactive session was done 3-5 days
per week and covered time, calendar, problem solving, word problems,
measurement, and number concepts like skip counting
We spent a great deal of time reviewing
and memorizing the 4 sets of math facts. Drills were done daily with flashcards
and worksheets. This memorization made teaching more complex arithmetic very
straightforward because my child was not struggling to remember his basic
facts.
We used Singapore
Math for teaching arithmetic. When we came to a difficult section (for
example, long division), we heavily supplemented with many different examples
of problems and extra worksheets. We worked through many problems together with
my child on the white board, so he could clearly see the steps involved.
