Coin Identification
Materials:
coins (real)
Some of this material was covered in the Saxon Math Meeting
(Grades 2-3) that we did for a year or so. The Math Meeting covered coin
identification and counting coins as well.
Coin and Bill identification and worth
Ask Eric to count the coins set out and then exchange them
for a coin or a bill of equal value. For example:
$1.00 (exchange for a dollar bill)
$0.25
(quarter)
$1.00 (dollar bill)
$0.05 (nickel)
$0.10 (dime)
$0.25 (quarter)
$0.10 (dime)
Do a few of these every day.
Shopping Program Part 1
For this program we used Name Your
Price and a set of fake bills and coins. Following the suggestions from the
teacherís guide, we started having Eric shop using the cards and pretend money.
We decided to make this a handís on type program because although Eric could count,
add, and subtract on paper, he needed practice actually handling coins and
bills and buying items. For part
1, we practiced with items that cost less than a dollar.
Show Eric the pricing cards ($0.05, $0.10, $0.25) and have
him match the correct coin with the card. He needs to be able to identify the
amount (i.e. 5 cents) as well as the name of the coin (nickel).
Next put out the following picture cards with their pricing
cards underneath them: candy ($0.05), lollipop ($0.25), apple ($0.10), and
pencil ($0.35). Have Eric identify how much each item costs and match the
correct coins to the cards.
Next, start using the shopping list cards. Use the card
that shows the pencil and the popcorn and the card that shows the lollipop and
the animal crackers. Put out the appropriate picture cards and the pricing
cards: pencil ($0.35), popcorn ($0.50), lollipop ($0.35) and animal crackers
($0.60). Talk about what shopping lists are used for.
Have Eric figure out how much money he will need to
purchase the items and count out the correct amount with the coins.
Repeat number 3 with different shopping lists and different
prices. Donít start doing change yet. Have him count out from his money tray
how much money he needs for each list.
Shopping Program Part 2. For this we used the following workbooks from Remedia. We had Eric do the problems both on
paper and by actually handling the money by counting out the coins/bills and
making change.
Allowance and saving for items
Eric got an allowance at the beginning of school every
week. When he wanted to buy something we used a saving
form. He filled this out every week until he had saved enough money to buy
his item.
