SONGS AND MUSIC

Benetta Benson's ABA Music Program
An excellent explanation of a music program implemented by the mother of a child with autism and hyperlexia
Our song program
Like games, songs are broken down into phrases. Each phrase is a target item and is taught by VI. At first, you sing the song and work on the child imitating the actions. As the child learns the song, try to get him to sing. You can start by singing all but the last word of the phrases, expecting the child to fill in the end. Work up to the child singing the entire song with you and doing the motions.
I created a separate song book with the lyrics and movements to the songs. This small three ring binder stays with the other programs books. Some songs were just photocopied out of the Wee Sing Series Books. Others were written out by myself or the tutors on notebook paper.
Resources
Any Wee Sing Book. These come with audiotapes and small lyric books with the melody lines written out in music notation (sometimes my tutors sang umÖwell the wrong notes). Sometimes we taught the song with the audiotape playing and it went faster.
Musical Mouseum This website lists lyrics for many popular childrenís songs.
Song Oriented Videotapes. My child learned a lot of songs from Silly Songs, Kids Songs Video Series, and yes, even Barney Tapes.
