Reading
To introduce social studies, we started with a
concrete topic--map reading. We started map skills in order to give Eric the
skills he would need to understand geography.
Resources
I created a Maps and Geography textbook for Eric by
combining content from three sources. The topics of these workbooks were
basically the same, so putting them all together provided much more repetition
and practice than one workbook alone. For example, each workbook introduced the
compass rose. By combining the worksheets from all three sources, extensive
practice and repetition was provided to solidify each skill. I prefer downloadable workbooks if I
can find them. I also prefer worksheets to be one-sided and printing from your
own computer allows you print one sided. I put all the worksheets on the same
topics together in a three ring binder to create the textbook. Confusing
materials or examples were left out. I listed all the different worksheets and
resources I used in the table of contents to give you an idea of the repetition
and practice this textbook provided.
